I have been in TBC since middle school when I was in the elementary band program. I really enjoyed my time there and thought that TBC was a great organization that was allowing kids to continue learning music even during the pandemic, so I applied to be an officer my freshman year. I got a basic entry-level finance position and I took this opportunity to really develop a good understanding of all parts of the finance department. I was also consistently taking opportunities outside of my role to show my dedication, which eventually paid off when I was able to move up to head of grants. I really liked this position because applying to grants is typically something that adults do and not many of my peers were getting experience with this. I am very thankful for the time I spent there because it served me well throughout my English classes in high school and is still helping me as I write my college essays now. In freshman year itself, I was given the opportunity to lead the finance team as department head, which allowed me to make an even bigger impact than I had before on the kids that were benefiting from our free programs. I think this position was the best use of my time during my sophomore year because being put in charge of handling 500,000+ dollars and running events for over 200 people gave me the pressure I needed to learn how to be responsible and make effective plans and lead a team toward achieving a goal. I don’t think I could have learned the same things TBC taught me at just another club in high school because TBC operates at a much larger scale. Everything I learnt from TBC about how to organize people and events are things I learned from actually doing, which helped them stick with me in new roles inside and outside of TBC. I am truly thankful for the opportunity this organization has given me to serve my community and I strongly encourage others to join because this experience really turned me into a much more capable leader and is perfect for high-achieving people.
